Who Does What?

Confused by the ballot? Understanding the roles of each leader helps you vote based on performance, not just popularity. Here's your cheat sheet for the Kenyan political structure.

County Government

Roles focused on your immediate community (Ward & County)

MCA

Member of County Assembly

Your voice at the Ward level. They represent your specific neighborhood in the County Assembly.

  • Makes laws for the County
  • Approves the County Budget
  • Oversight: Checks if the Governor is spending money correctly

Women Rep

Women Representative

Elected to represent all women in the County at the National Assembly, but also sits in the County Assembly.

  • Advocates for women's rights & welfare
  • Brings national resources to the county
  • Votes on national laws affecting women/youth

Governor

County CEO

The Chief Executive of the County. They implement the laws and manage the county budget.

  • Manages Health, Agriculture, Roads & Trade
  • Appoints the County Executive Committee (Cabinet)
  • Responsible for service delivery (hospitals, garbage, markets)

National Government

Roles focused on the whole country (Constituency & National)

MP

Member of Parliament

Represents your Constituency in the National Assembly. They make laws for the whole country.

  • Makes National Laws
  • Approves National Budget & Taxes
  • Oversight of National Ministries (e.g., Education, Transport)

Senator

County Protector

Represents the entire County at the National level. They protect the interests of devolution.

  • Protects County Governments from National interference
  • Decides how revenue is shared (Equitable Share)
  • Oversight of National funds sent to Counties

National Govt

President & Deputy

The Head of State and Government. They handle issues that affect every Kenyan.

  • Defense, Foreign Policy, Immigration
  • National Policy (Education, Health Standards)
  • Currency, National Transport & Infrastructure
